The Superior Chieftaincy of Canton Bell – History and Legacy
The Superior Chieftaincy of Canton Bell is one of Cameroon’s prominent traditional institutions, located in the Douala I district, with Bali neighborhood serving as its headquarters. It was officially established in 1792 by Prince Bélè ba Doo, following the passing of his father, Doo la Makongo – also known as King Joss – who was the last sovereign to reign over all the Douala people from his capital in Bonanjo between 1756 and 1792.

Geographic Location
Situated in the Wouri division of the Littoral region, the Canton Bell chieftaincy belongs administratively to the Douala I district. It holds the status of a First-Degree Traditional Authority, as defined by Decree No. 019/CAB/PM dated February 7, 1981, which governs the classification of traditional chiefdoms in Cameroon.
Historical Origins
Originally, the Douala people were unified under a single monarch, Doo la Makongo. Over time, the kingdom evolved and was divided into six major canton chiefdoms, among which the Canton Bell chieftaincy stands as a cultural and historical cornerstone for the Douala population.
Lineage of Rulers
Since its foundation in 1792, leadership of the chieftaincy has been handed down through successive generations. Since 2012, His Majesty Jean-Yves Dieudonné Gaston Eboumbou Douala Manga has been the reigning chief, following in the footsteps of his father, Prince René Douala Manga Bell.
